One of the two strongest players at the club. Has played board one for many years. Also plays for Yorkshire in the County Championship, White Rose in the 4NCL and York RI in the Yorkshire League.
Recently joined from Phoenix Farshad has established himself as a leading member of the A team.
A recent recruit, Stuart has established himself in the C team.
Ivan Basarab-Horwath ECF
Having recently retired Ivan is hoping to spend a little more time at chess and is the 400 League team captain.
Chris Beevers ECF
Chris did not play for the club last season as he and his partner recently had a baby daughter. As life gets easier it is hoped that he will return to the club and team.
A recent recruit, Stuart has established himself in the C team.
Jim Burnett ECF
One of the strongest local chess players. He is also known for his attempt to climb all of the Munro mountains in Scotland. As well as organising local chess congresses, Jim regularly plays in the British Championship and for Sheffield in the Yorkshire League. He has been Ecclesall Chess Club Champion for the last two seasons.
Ed Carnie ECF
Due to poor health Ed did not play for us last season, we are hoping that he recovers and is able to play for the club again.
Peter Cooper ECF
A stalwart of our B team, Peter was Player of the Season for 2014-2015.
Ewan Cormack ECF
As well as playing a high board for Ecclesall, Ewan has played in the Summer League team and for Sheffield in the Yorkshire League. Recently he has been coaching the weaker players at the club.
Danny Dhunna ECF
Danny only took up competitive chess this season and improved remarkably through the season. Having taken part in Congresses in Calderdale, Doncaster, Sheffield and Nottingham. He has moved away to Bradford, but we hope that he comes back and sees us from time to time.
John H. T. Eddershaw ECF
A solid player for the Knights team, John often underestimates his ability but his current ECF grade of 100 represents his true ability. With 67 graded games (ECF) this season John is one of the most active players from the club, a keen ECF member and always plays at the British Championship event and has also this season played in the Bradford, Scarborough, Nottingham, Sheffield and Doncaster Congresses as well as the Bury St Edmunds, Preston, Isle of Man, Frodsham, Blackpool St Albans and Rhyl Congresses and in the Combined Services Championship.
Bill Egan ECF
As well as playing at Scunthorpe in the Lincolnshire Leagues, Sheffield in the Yorkshire League and Ecclesall in the Sheffield League, Bill somehow finds time to play in Weekend Congresses and to be a grandfather. He won the Holroyd Trophy for an unbeaten performance in the Sheffield Individual Championship
Philip G. Ellis ECF
Phil has relocated to France but is playing at Scarborough, a good reason to go, and catch up with his news.
John Fryer ECF
John supports the club as well as all of the wonderful work he does at SASCA. He also enters the Sheffield Individual Championship. He is a former club champion.
A former member, recently re-joined from Phoenix , Saeed has established himself as a leading member of the C team.
Peter W. Hempson ECF
A strong player, has played for the club for many years, most recently playing board 2/3. Also plays for Yorkshire in the County Championship and Sheffield in the Yorkshire League. He has been club champion 20 times. He is an active congress player, this season playing in the Scarborough, Doncaster, Durham, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Congresses as well as at the British Championship. He is current club champion.
Peter J. Hoare ECF
As well as playing for our B team, Peter has played in the Paignton, Scarborough and Doncaster Congresses.
Mike Howarth ECF
One of the most reliable players in the club, regularly turning out for the B team and turning out for the D team last season, sometimes at very short notice. He can usually be relied on not to lose his games, and often manages to win against higher grade opponents.
Alan S. McIntosh ECF
As well as playing for Ecclesall A team and in the Summer League Team, Alan is Ecclesall B team captain. He also plays for Yorkshire in the County Championship, and has played in the Doncaster and Sheffield Congresses. He has been club secretary since 2014.
Ken A. McIntosh ECF
As well as playing for Ecclesall A team and in the Summer League Team, Ken plays for Sheffield B team in the Yorkshire League. He also plays for Yorkshire in the County Championship, and has played in the Sheffield Congress.
Gunnar Mallon ECF
Gunnar is a lecturer/researcher at Sheffield University. He also plays in Congresses, for Sheffield in the Yorkshire League and BCNM in the 4NCL.
Chris J. Marley ECF
Until recently the A team captain, Chris still plays for the A team and also Sheffield in the Yorkshire League. He has been club champion seven times, and once drew with former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov in a simul.
James Marley ECF
The current A team captain, not only has he had a successful season in the Sheffield League, he has played in the Summer League and for Sheffield in the Yorkshire League. He was recently unbeaten at the Sheffield Congress in the Major Section finishing 5th. James is also joint club champion, and has been club champion once previously.
Peter Mitchell R.I.P
Peter has recently passed away. He had been in poor health recently which limited his chess. Peter used to regularly appear for the A, B, C and D teams but recently limited his appearances to the Knights/400 League teams. A former secretary and librarian for the club, Peter was one of the clubs long-standing members. In recent seasons Peter has beaten Alan Coupe, Steve Moxon, John Knight, Ron Keenan, Ken Kay, Joe Morrison and this season Josh Speakman. Outside chess Peter enjoying playing the violin as well as playing snooker. He was previously a keen golfer.
Joseph G. Morrison R.I.P.
It is with the greatest of sadness that we report the passing of Joe Morrison, a stalwart of Ecclesall Chess Club. After a successful career as violinist with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra Joe joined Ecclesall Chess Club in the late 1990s. He has played for every team in the club and has captained many of them. At the time of his death he was an honorary member of the club and as Tournament Organiser he was organising the Club Championship.
Everyone that met him counts him among their friends and he will be sadly missed.
He recently stepped down as C team captain after many years. He was also a seven times winner of the under 110 club championship, and recent winner of the Under 140 tournament and former club champion. Joe was a keen ECF member and always played at the British Championship event and had also this season played in the Bradford, Scarborough (finishing 7th), Nottingham, Sheffield and Doncaster Congresses as well as taking part in the Sheffield Individual Championship.
Ken Norbury ECF
Ken is an accredited ECF chess coach. Recently working abroad, Ken has returned to playing after a serious operation . He was the Rooks player of the season in 2014-2015 going throughout the season unbeaten, principally playing on board 2. He is working on a second book as well as chess coaching, having published a book on the Shuffleduck ( see separate section) which has had favourable reviews in the British Chess Magazine the Times and Spectator as well as being mentioned in a special edition by Edward Winter on the move 1.h4..
John Robertson ECF
A member of our Knights team, John also occasionally plays in the Under 140 tournament.
Coming back to chess after a long absence and joining the club last season Ken has represented the D team, the Summer League Team and is the captain of the Rooks. He is also an active member of the Under 140 tournament.
John Speck ECF
Since joining the club in the summer John has been very enthusiastic about playing and is the captain of the D team and the Summer League Team.
Elliott is undergoing training to become a paramedic, but when he has time he is a very enthusiastic chess player, and as one of Ken Norbury's neighbours, he has shown an enthusiasm for the Shuffleduck and other openings recommended by Ken. In spite of this he is rapidly improving and we expect him to move up through the teams over the next few seasons if he can find time to play for us.

Rod is currently recovering from an operation but hopes to be back playing soon.
Geoff Waddilove ECF
Geoff has many other things in his life but enjoys playing the odd game for the Bishops team.
Robert Walton ECF
A recent recruit from Phoenix, Rob is settling in at the club, performing very well last season on board 2 in the Knights team. A keen and successful badminton player limits Robs availability for the club.
Pete Willoughby ECF
Our webmaster is new member coordinator. He organises the Under 140 tournament and plays a few weekend congress during the season, and captains Sheffield D in the Yorkshire League.
Richard Wood ECF
One of the improving players at the club, Richard is a low handicap golfer. He did find some time to play in the odd congress but generally could not afford to spend the whole weekend at the events (York, Blackpool, Nottingham and Middlesbrough).
Norman A. Wragg OBE ECF
Norman has been our chairman for many years. Prior to that he was club secretary. As well as playing for our B team, Norman has appeared for Sheffield in the Yorkshire League and played in the Paignton, Scarborough and Doncaster Congresses as well as playing in the Braille Chess Championships.
